Designing with, and, for the inhabitants of the area is an important aspect of office work. By formulating challenging concepts they explore the tensions between dream and reality through architectural and urban design. Many of JDWA office projects contain building combinations of renovation, intensive re-use and smart extensions. WHY THE TALK IS INSPIRING?
In front of us lies a big task in renovation, conversion and redevelopment of existing buildings and structures. This challenge is more than just reprogramming premises, it is also building. This concerns not only houses and offices, but also shops, factory buildings and all kinds of public structures, ranging from churches to sports halls. And it's not just relevant to monuments, but also to the community center around the corner, built in seventies. In this lecture, "Strategies for renewal", we want to show our approach towards renovation, conversion and redevelopment of different building typologies, through a number of projects. We try to detect interesting strategies through a detailed analysis of the projects, where both architecture and interaction with users is equally important.
THE SPEAKER RECOMMENDS TO READ
S,M,L,XL a book by Rem Koolhaas and Bruce Mau
S, M, L, XL is a novel on architecture. It tries to tell the story of architecture rather than just showing the architecture itself. The book is a collage of essays, diary excerpts, photographs, architectural plans, sketches, cartoons and images, that reflects on the (design) process and tries to unveil the conceptual relation between different projects ordered by scale. It is looking for a general thinking about architecture and the contemporary city exploring the impact of politics, context, the economy, globalization.
