Micro-exhibition series BUILDING NARRATIVES - EXHIBITION #6 | WHAT DOES EIGULIAI SAY. CORRIDOR

12
SEP 2021

In the sixth micro-exhibition from "Building Narratives" series, we present the project by Goda Verikaitė – an audio tour "What does Eiguliai Say" and its fragment "Corridor".

The audio tour "What Does Eiguliai Say" (“Ką kalba Eiguliai”)  by Goda Verikaitė explores the powers of narratives, that encourages us to see our ordinary everyday environment differently, and our expanded imagination, which can change both the future of everyday architecture and our future in it. While creating "What Does Eiguliai Say", Goda invited the residents of the post Soviet mass housing microrayon Eiguliai in Kaunas to take a virtual and live walks together and tell their local, little-known stories about the area. Goda transformed the told stories and wandered routes into new narratives and, intertwining with future speculations, turned them into an audio walk around Eiguliai. While listening to audio narratives and taking the route around this area filled with massive residential architecture, we can unexpectedly discover microutopian zones, an independent garage republic, energy transformers, futuristic towers, forest of miracles, and meet green anarchists. The video “Corridor” shown in the exhibition is the filmed fragment of the audio tour “What Does Eiguliai Say” route.

We invite you to explore Goda‘s works both at the cultural centre SODAS 2123 (until the 12th of September) and in the virtual, expanded exhibition with the live comments by the author, links to the recording of audio tour, Goda‘s earlier and later works exploring the intertwined urban presences and speculative futures.

About “Building Narratives”

In the micro-exhibition series, we present works developed within Architektūros fondas programme "Building Narratives" in 2019–2020. Creatives of the  “Building Narratives” programme explored the relations between architecture and narrative, when buildings aren’t shaped by mortar and concrete anymore – crucial and sometimes the most important ingredient is narrative. Whether it is purely a PR product or an organic construct it creates perceptions and shapes the way we see and understand our environment. Hearing, reading or assembling a narrative from smaller pieces helps us to determine if something is good, useful and even beautiful. At the same time, changing narrative has the power to change perceptions of our environment. Bad can become good, ugly-beautiful, all without any changes in physical structure.

As a new narrative has the power to transform architecture on its own, it becomes extremely important to understand how different ways of talking about architecture can shape its future. Therefore Architektūros fondas was seeking to discover personal narratives and encourage the creatives to get involved in this affair. Programme merged the ongoing projects of Architektūros fondas and their methods, while looking for common ground among podcasts and publications platform Aikštėje and Future Architecture platform creatives.
