Individual character and spirit – these are they that describe architecture of Klaipėda and the entire seaside region typical of the Soviet period. Although the downtown area of the city was particularly modified by Socialist Realism construction works, and the elaboration process of the first general plan (1959 – 1960) almost neglected the specific nature of the seaside city, the generation of architects having started working at the beginning of the sixties initiated searches for an architectural future conception of Klaipėda. To the latter, display of the local architecture distinction served as a departure point, the more especially as a negative aspect of industrialisation was also acknowledged little by little.
