LIUDMILA KIRPICHEV, VLADISLAV KIRPICHEV - PAPER ARCHITECTURE IN THE SOVIET UNION. PROTAGONISTS, TEACHERS AND STUDENTS LOOKING BACK AT THE 1980’s
DISSIDENCE THROUGH ARCHITECTURE
The Conversation is chaired by
INES WEIZMAN
In the late 1970s and 1980s EDAS (Experimentalnaya Detskaya Architekturnaya Studia) was exercising a form of dissidence in workshops run with children and young adults, encouraging them to express their fantasies through drawings and architectural design. The practice could be thought of today as located between pedagogy and therapy – the ‘repair’ of the suppressed imagination of youth living under communism. Through the teaching private imagination and collective fantasy could be liberated. Children drawings were made effective in their uncontrollable and irresistible message calling for independent thought.

“Not even Henri Matisse or any other painter of the 20th century draws and paints as fresh as the uncorrupted mind of 5 year old. The Kirpichevs, perhaps the most exciting architecture educators in the world, show that this phenomena applies to three-dimentional work as well. The Kirpichevs work with very young children in professional workshops, teaching them to design and build architectural structures of a most intriguing aesthetic quality. The visual power of the work by these children competes with much we have seen from the most high profile architects, in a way that is beautiful and astonishing...” Christian Moeller, Professor in the Department of Design & Media Arts at the University of California, Los Angeles / 2005
