DRUSKININKAI. SOVIET PERIOD - ALGIMANTAS MAČIULIS

29
SEP 2012

Postwar arrangements and the subsequent rapid development aimed at maintaining in Druskininkai the relation between nature and architecture characteristic of the resort town, at ensuring the scale appropriate for construction works and at preserving the available silhouette of the town. All the aforementioned was typical of the early moderate period lasting until the year 1971, when Druskininkai, Birštonas, Palanga and Neringa were declared resorts of national importance. The present decree was followed by searches for new urban and architectural values or by the era of active reforms having resulted in the increased number of floors of buildings and the massive sanatorium blocks constructed in compliance with standard projects and added to the silhouette of the town aggressively. Along with them, a significant share was held by the unique recreational facilities constructed in compliance with individual projects and having turned into one of the most original buildings standing as benchmarks of Modernism of the Soviet period in Lithuania. How to combine the architectural thought outbursts provoked by the recreational architecture character and meet the requirements applicable to the resort of national importance maintaining at the same time the relation between nature and new architecture? The issue having accompanied the growth of Druskininkai town throughout the Soviet epoch is also relevant today.
